12x12 Art Fundraiser

Today we feature an interview with one of our 12×12 Art Fundraiser featured artists, Tessa Raven of Oklahoma City. Tessa Raven is a young visual artist who was recently awarded the Curator’s Choice Award for her work in Momentum OKC 2015.

What inspires you to create art? them, the overwhelming sensory overload that is living everyday life and being an observant and emotional person. There is so much inside of me, hiding in the corners of my psyche, that I never know is there until I start to make a piece. It’s the best way I know how to get it out.

How do you know when your piece is finished?
For me it is very much instinct. I’ll look at it from all angles (literally) before I decide if it’s done, I’ll ask “How does it make me feel?” and because most of the pieces I do are “Fictional Portraits” I’ll ask “Do I connect with this character?” I am also very detail oriented so I will nitpick the details until they’re just where I want them. A lot of that is unspoken but that’s essentially the process with every piece.

What is the thought process behind the work in this year’s 12×12?
It’s a little hard to explain, all of my best work flows naturally without much thought. Not that I don’t have thoughts behind them, it’s just that my art is very much how I get away from the overthinking that invades my everyday life and seems to come from a much more subconscious feelings place. With this years piece I really liked the idea of having a modern figure with Baroque themes (The gold, the lute, the angel wings, the arrows) so I rolled with that and played on the feelings that naturally arose.

Where else can viewers see your work?

You can follow me from my website Tessaravenart.com or where I’m most active which is on Instagram as @teeraves I will also be a vendor at this years Plaza Fest in the Plaza District on September 26th so come say hi!
