Art 365 Curator: Dana Turkovic
November 3, 2015
Art 365 is a triennial exhibition from the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition which offers five Oklahoma artists $12,000 to create innovative artwork over the course of a year in collaboration with a nationally recognized curator.
Curating this round of Art 365 projects is Dana Turkovic, Curator of Exhibitions at Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis, MO.
Accredited by the American Association of Museums, Laumeier Sculpture Park is today an institution of international significance. The institution itself is one of a handful of open-air museums around the world, and a unique complement to the cultural landscape of the St. Louis region.
At the Laumier, Turkovic has raised the profile of the museum and curated cutting edge exhibitions, such as one of her first exhibitions, Electric is the Love. This exhibition featured local artists working with technology, and put outdoor sculptures indoors. Of this project, Turkovic says she wanted to “create an exhibition that was unlike anything Laumeier has hosted in the past.”
In 2005, Turkovic received her Master of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths College-University of London in curatorial studies and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Webster University, St. Louis in 1998.
Turkovic has organized exhibitions in Athens, Los Angeles and New York, in alternative spaces in London and Oxford and in St. Louis at the Contemporary Art Museum, Boots Contemporary Art Space, Ellen Curlee Gallery, Hunt Gallery, Schmidt Contemporary Art and White Flag Projects.
Turkovic is also co-curator of Isolation Room/Gallery Kit, a gallery started in her dining room. The project is open-source, with downloadable blueprints of the space.
“[The purpose is] to give people a model of how you can function as a highly conceptual art space, with minimal money, a cost efficient method of bringing in artists that are interesting, and with the potential for satellite spaces in other cities it would allow us to then show St. Louis artists in other cities,” says Turkovic. “We are hoping to build more gallery kits in other places and turn over the space to curators to run the space as a loose network.”
Upcoming projects include the first mid-career survey in the United States of Bosnian photographer and filmmaker Danica Dakić to open in 2015 and a new outdoor commission for Delhi based artists Raqs Media Collective and Gigi Scaria both working with the Creative India Foundation. Turkovic is also a cocurator for Moving Image Festival 2015 at Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town. She has written for publications such as Art US, Review and St. Louis Magazine.
Turkovic will be reviewing the Art 365 proposals and will work with 5 artists to create a new body of work over the period of a year. Artists have the opportunity to apply to Art 365 through November 15, 2015. Visual artists working in all media are eligible to submit, including traditional studio art media as well as film and new media. Learn more at www.art365.org
