For most of my life I have worked in two-dimensions, as a printmaker and recently as a painter. A few years ago I began a series of battleships for my son. He has since outgrown them – but I have not outgrown the need to make them. They are built of wood scraps salvaged from various sources and finished with numerous coats of oil-based enamel paint. The turrets can all be rotated. I am at a loss to explain my fascination with these objects inspired by the age of steam-powered Navies. Nostalgia for a time when imperialism was still sexy perhaps.
