Ginnie Baer

Artist Statement

My work explores the relationship between humans and the landscape. My recent paintings have been inspired by Oklahoma. I’m interested in the land itself, the flat plains and rolling hills, the brush that clings to the earth, the craggy trees and deeply carved creeks. I’m also interested in the ubiquitous housing subdivisions that exist here; specifically, the names assigned to these neatly fenced or walled off neighborhoods. Romantic monikers like “Forest Oaks” or “Turtle Creek Cove”, conjure up a vastly different kind of place than the plains and former prairies where rows of similar looking homes now sit. Through painting, I try to remedy or exaggerate this absurdity.
