The 2016 iteration of Momentum OKC will be curated by Lead Curator Trent Lawson and Emerging Curator Catherine Shotick.

The curators are accepting proposals for Momentum Spotlight through November 15. Spotlight Artists are commissioned to make new work with $2,000 and 3 months curatorial guidance. More information is available at  You can learn more about this year’s lead emerging curator Catherine Shotick in today’s blog post.

What is your interest in curating?

I am interested in curating because it is such an inspirational process on many levels. By gathering various artistic voices together, we can not only highlight individual work, but also help create new meaning by extending and combining their visual contexts. The whole artistic/exhibition process is intellectually rewarding for the organizers, the artists, and the viewers. Curating is also a great way to make connections with artists and art professionals and to create a dialogue within our community.

What made you interested in curating Momentum OKC?

Most of my studies and career experiences so far have involved artists of the past, and Momentum offers the experience of working strictly with young artists of the present. I am also intrigued at the prospect of curating works made using various media, such as film, performance, new media, installation, and music.

What do you hope to learn from this experience? What do you think you can bring to this experience from your work as an institutional curator?

I hope to get to know the young artists in Oklahoma, and learn what issues and ideas are important to them. I also hope to bring my collaborative spirit and use the project management skills I have learned by working in the curatorial department at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

What is your experience with Momentum?

My experience has been strictly as an exhibition viewer– I have been a visitor to the OKC Momentum show since moving here two years ago.  The two Momentum shows I went to were great–I saw a lot of innovative and thought-provoking artworks. The event was full of visitors from all age groups, and everyone seemed to be having an enjoyable time.

Momentum OKC opens March 4th & 5th in Oklahoma City.  General entries are due January 25, 5pm. Oklahoma artists aged 30 and younger are eligible. Learn more at
