    • BancFirst Tower

The Howell Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by Dennis R. Johnson at BancFirst Tower Underground, 100 North Broadway Avenue.

Johnson has painted for over forty years, building a body of work that moves fluidly between abstraction and photorealism. His abstract paintings bring an unexpected sense of control, order, and realism — qualities he deliberately introduces to challenge assumptions about what abstract work can be. "My paintings are like inventions," Johnson says. "I love discovering new territory."

In recent years, Johnson has turned his attention to a series of photorealist works, finding in them a new set of challenges and a fresh perspective on his lifelong passion. The exhibition brings together paintings from both bodies of work, showcasing the range of an artist who describes his practice simply: "I live to paint and paint to live."

The exhibition remains on view through July 2026.

    • Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art

    Geometric painting by Frederick Hammersley
On the Edge: The Abstract World of Frederick Hammersley traces the artist’s pursuit of abstraction across spontaneous compositions, geometric designs, and works that sought to break from tradition. Frederick Hammersley (1919–2009) is recognized as a key figure in the mid-century Hard-edge movement—a style defined by precise geometric compositions and a strong focus on the relationship between color and form, marked by sharp edges and clearly defined shapes. This exhibition features more than 45 paintings and drawings from the Hugon Collection, offering a unique glimpse into Hammersley’s distinctive style and artistic process.

On the Edge: The Abstract World of Frederick Hammersley is organized by the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and supported by the Hugon Family and generous donors to the museum’s endowment.

    • Downtown Tulsa Partnership

The Downtown Tulsa Partnership (DTP) is seeking qualifications from experienced artists or artist teams for a large-scale, semi-permanent (10 years) public art installation in the E 4th Street Alley. The installation must incorporate lighting or illumination as a core component and contribute to the transformation of this underutilized alleyway into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly space connecting the hotels and offices of the Deco District with the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, Williams Green, and Blue Dome District.

This project is part of a broader initiative to activate Downtown Tulsa alleyways through art and placemaking. Qualified artists will be selected based on their experience, artistic vision, and ability to execute projects of similar scale and complexity. Shortlisted artists will be invited to submit detailed proposals during a subsequent Request for Proposals (RFP) phase in September 2026.

This RFQ is open to professional artists and groups of artists with experience in large-scale public art installations involving lighting. Local and regional artists are encouraged to apply, though all qualified applicants will be considered.

    • Positive Space Tulsa

Local Artist erin rappleye’s Solo Exhibit "okay love letters" Opens Friday, June 12 at Positive Space

"okay love letters" is an ongoing series inspired by the struggle to kindle lasting connections from pixelated sparks on the digital marketplace of love. Repeated repackaging of oneself into six photos, stats, and a series of ice breaker questions becomes a tired ritual where personal identity and physical appearance fall victim to lossy compression. This is compounded by a funhouse mirror of beauty standards and gendered expectations reinforced by algorithms and the occasional IRL interaction.

Rappleye uses jewelry and sculpture as a mediator to explore relationships, gender, behavior, and sexuality. She is particularly interested in moments of cringe, failure, and misunderstanding to find humor and growth in the search for lasting connection.

About the Artist: erin rappleye (she/her/hers) is an artist working in small metals/art jewelry and sculpture. She earned an MFA in Jewelry + Metal Arts with Distinction in 2015 from the University of Iowa. In 2019, she co-curated an international contemporary art jewelry exhibition for 108|Contemporary in Tulsa, OK, called "Building on the Body." Erin is an Assistant Professor of Art at Tulsa Community College. She has exhibited her artwork nationally and maintains a studio practice at Positive Space Tulsa.

Join us for an intentional gathering and gentle movement led by Beth White of This Land Yoga as we dig into the offerings of the full moon. This time may provide abundance for those willing to slow down long enough to listen. Sinking into the atmosphere of the Wonder Room will allow for imagination to spark, and open the heart to receive and expand.

This session will include slow restorative stretching and sound healing. This class is for people of any skill level.

Participants can explore the full Mix-Tape immersive art experience before the session begins.

Group Exhibition "Women’s Work" Opening Friday, July 3 at Positive Space Tulsa

"Women’s Work," curated by Claudette Torneden, is an exhibition of artwork by women that boldly confronts, questions, and reimagines the spaces women are told they “should” and “should not” occupy. Through diverse media, these artists confront the inequalities deeply rooted in the art world environment, address the systemic issues unique to women in the arts, and reframe the narratives historically used to confine or silence women.

Each artist brings a unique perspective shaped by their individual experiences facing the expectations of “women’s art” as well as society more broadly during their careers, with works created for this exhibit revealing to the audience what only Women’s Work can: our perspective, our lens, our challenges, and our accomplishments. Works include photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, assemblage, and more.

Exhibit Artists: Alex Eischeid, Ashley Forrest, Aztrid Moan, Behnaz Sohrabian, Bridget Trowbridge, Candacee White, Catherine Prose, Christina Armendariz, Claudette Torneden, Colleen Stiles, Destiny J. Green, J.P. Morrison, Jordan Vinyard, Julia Hale, Kim Schwichtenberg, L. Katherine Roberts, Lauryl Payne, Leah Gose, Leslie Hamrick, Marsha Mueller, Melinda Green Harvey, Nicole Moan, Rochelle Lee Hardman, Shannon Cannings, Stephanie Choate, Wendy Chambers.

About the Curator: Claudette Torneden is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans photography, painting, drawing, and printmaking. Her background includes education at the University of New Orleans and Memphis College of Art, as well as work experience in illustration, advertising design, and journalism. Her work has been featured in various publications, exhibited nationwide, and is held in multiple private and corporate collections across the country.

Join 108|Contemporary for this workshop led by Sally Garner to learn about the unique sculptural aspects of basket weaving. This workshop is focused on exploring sculptural techniques used in basket weaving to create unexpected organic abstracted forms that will merge this traditionally functional craft with freeform object-making. In this class we will first talk about various basketry structures that create form and begin by sketching some ideas for our sculptures. We'll play with soaked and pliable basket reed, incorporating variations on traditional structures, such as random weave, coiling, and plain weave, as they pertain to freely expanding beyond traditional basket shapes. Due to the pace of this workshop, some basic knowledge of basket weaving is helpful, but not required. If you're coming to this workshop as a new basket weaver, expect to have an open mind on how your work may turn out, because we will see how sometimes the reed will direct the weaver, instead of the other way around. It is likely that participants will leave with a partially completed piece and the knowledge to continue working on it at home; however, some may be able to finish a piece or two within the timeframe of the workshop, depending on the complexity of each person's design and existing knowledge on basket weaving.
